New Year’s Resolutions to Improve Fertility: Get Your Body Ready for Pregnancy

Before getting pregnant there are some major changes that need to take place in order to get your body into shape for the baby. You have to ensure that you reach a healthy weight and that you are taking the proper vitamins. Fertility is a tricky thing, but it is easier if you are able to do a few simple tasks yourself.

Exercise and Maintaining Weight

If you are trying to conceive, you have to keep in mind that your weight can play a big role in your periods (as well as your ovulation). The first thing you should do is come up with a routine workout schedule that involves lots of cardio and some minor weights (if you are trying to tone muscle). This will help you stay in shape and it can maximize the possibility of you getting pregnant. Once you have conceived, you will want to take special care not to put on too much weight (which will stress your body out) and not to lose too much weight (so your baby will get plenty of nutrients).

Try to always choose fresh fruits, veggies, and meats over processed or canned goods. Processed foods are jammed pack with unnecessary substances that will hinder your weight loss. Try to stick with foods that are high in zinc and vitamin E & C. Folic acid will also help quite a bit. To ensure that you are getting the proper amount of vitamins and nutrients, try taking a multi-vitamin to fulfill all your needs.

What to Avoid

Cigarette smoking is a big no-no for women trying to get pregnant and quitting also helps make sperm more viable. That even goes for second-hand smoke. If you are trying to conceive, it is smart to quit smoking at least six months prior to starting. Drinking alcohol, ingesting too much caffeine and using herbal remedies may also put a damper on conception.

Take It Easy

The last thing you will want to do while pregnant or attempting to get pregnant is to overdo it. Stress can negatively impact your chances for conceiving and can cause problems if you’re currently carrying a child. Just remember to take it easy and minimize stress (or your stress reaction) whenever possible. Make sure to pace yourself and find a natural balance that will benefit you and your baby. Remember to address any pregnancy related questions you may have to your OB-GYN. They will be able to help with any further information.
